In chapter 39 (a discourse on pain) the yellow emperor asks his advisor about the relationships of Qi, internal movements and emotions.

“I know that all kinds of illnesses arise from qi.

Anger causes qi to rise,

joy causes qi to relax,

sorrow causes qi to dissipate,

fear causes qi to descend,

cold causes qi to contract,

heat causes qi to disperse,

shock causes qi to become chaotic,

overexertion causes qi to deplete,

and worry causes qi to be bound.

These nine types of qi disturbances differ; what illnesses do they produce?"

In his answer, the physician adviser explains the internal dynamics, for example:

"Sorrow causes tension in the heart's connecting vessels, tightens the lung's leaf-like structures and obstructs the upper jiao (chest), preventing the nutritive and defensive qi from dispersing."

(Huang Di Nei Jing, Su Wen 39)
