“The heart manifests externally (Biao表)

The kidneys govern the interior (Li裏)”

(Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen 52)

The heart-kidneys axis is an expression of the fire-water dynamics – the most essential elements of life forms.

The water-kidneys anchor consciousness in the depth and govern the foundational organization and structures of life while the heart emanates the spirit light (Shenming) outwardly, expressing the inner forces to the external environment.

Su Wen chapter 9 gives a few more details:

“The heart is the fundamental source of life and the organ where spirit (Shen) manifests. it blooms in the face, its fullness resides in the blood vessels; it belongs to Yang among Yangs, corresponding with summer Qi.”

“The kidneys are the root of concealment and storage, the dwelling place of essence (Jing). Their brilliance appears in the hair, their fullness resides within bones; they belong to Yin within Yins, corresponding with winter Qi.”

Another aspect of the connection of the heart & kidneys is the hand & foot shao yin channels – one of the 6 pairs that make up the intricate web enveloping the body.

As we are now in the lunar month of the autumn equinox (the 10th of the 12 earthly branches), the flow in the foot shao yin (kidneys) channel is abundant. Gathering Qi back into the depth

Tomorrow our practice will explore the dynamics of sinking to the depth of the water-kidneys and the lower Dan Tian and the blooming of the fire-heart in the chest & face.
